Description:
Original tire Pirelli Scorpion BK, 345/60 VR 17, brand new, extremely rare to find (if only possible), made specially for the famous SUV Lamborghini LM002. Up to 5 tires available. On the photo they are the nearer five. The other 4 tires have been sold on June 21st 2021
The LM002 (1986-1993) is historically the very first high performance - high luxury 4 x 4 SUV, in the automobile industry, and thus no tires pre-existed in the market for such vehicles.
In order to meet this need, Lamborghini commissioned Pirelli to create the Scorpion tire, with or without run-flat tread designs.
Then Pirelli made a totally new product, specifically for the LM002, which they finally offered in two different tread designs, one for mixed use (Scorpion Zero) and the other for off-road sand use (Scorpion BK).
The BK tire could be run virtually flat without risk and could handle the desert heat, the load, and the speeds of the LM002. On the photo t
he closer 5 tires are Scorpion BK, now for sale here. T
he last 4 tires at the end are Scorpion Zero (now sold via another listing to an happy east coast customer).
Only 328 Lamborghini LM002 vehicle units were ever made, not 301 as commonly reported. Therefore not many of these tires were manufactured. Original unit price was about 1,500 USD/tire in 1986, 35 years ago, very high for a tire.
Now production is discontinued and dealers have long ago sold their remaining precious inventory.
Flat tire technology is expensive and makes it very unlikely that these specially tailored tires will ever be manufactured again. Very few LM002 are on the road and those who are still around, are sparingly used, because they become always more valuable (between 250,000 USD and 500,000 USD at the beginning of 2021, depending on the year and condition). No economically viable market exists for Pirelli to remanufacture these tires unless LM002 collector prices get so high that producing a tire in line with new LM002’s values becomes feasible again.
Here are proposed 5 never mounted tires, new, in pristine condition, always kept in correct controlled A/C storage. It is possibly the very last genuinely new batch, IN THE WORLD, of 5 tires Pirelli Scorpion BK, 345/60 VR 17. The price shown is for one tire.
These tires are sculptural pieces of art, made of solid rubber. They are extremely heavy (37.8 kg = 83.33 lbs each). The 5 tires are 189 kg (416,65 lbs) without any wrapping nor box.
If you have a showroom, they can become unique decoration items by themselves.
If you have a LM002, do not miss this opportunity to acquire them. They can be used on the road, perfectly safely in my opinion. No risk to blow-up!
LM002 owners are keen to have these tires fitted because it is a privilege to own a car sitting upon such tires, the same car having also a wild, money-is-no-object, fuel economy, necessitating a big gas tank (290 liters = 77 gallons).
Most LM002 owners drive (sparingly) on Pirelli Scorpion tires which have seen better days. The collector value of any LM will definitely increase by more than the money invested into these very rare pieces, when fitted with perfect Pirelli Scorpion BK tires, if only for aesthetic reasons.
Here are 5 tires, sold per unit. It is advisable to purchase the whole set.
Age and dates: the manufacturing date of the one on the photo is 409, meaning 40th week of 1989 (see photo), as all tires manufactured prior to year 2000 have only a 3 digit week/year manufacturing date. Although they look and bounce as on the day of manufacture, they would be more sensibly used for car shows, concours d'elegance, or other display purposes.
In practice, who spends his time deciphering tire dates...? Answer: nobody in charge of law-enforcement, because
no law
exists linking the age of tires to their road use.
No matter how old the tires are, the most important aspect of tire safety is regular maintenance and inspection.
According to the The Rubber Manufacturer’s Association of America and the Tire & Rubber Association of Canada:
“Since service and storage conditions vary widely, accurately predicting the service life of any specific tire based on calendar age is not possible.”
For this reason, there is no specific legal limitation on the age of tires.
Tire dealers would have peoples discard their tires every year if they could and pass around false “rules” about age, which have no legal counterpart.
Pirelli Scorpion BK, 345/60 VR 17 tires are for 17” rims. They are large and heavy, measuring 32" in overall diameter and are 1 foot 2 inches ¾ wide, so be advised that adequate transportation of all 5 tires cannot be done in any everyday car. No trunk will fit more than one.
Shipping prices will depend upon the number of tires bought. In person pick-up is possible.
Should you want any additional photo, advise accordingly.
PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE BEFORE BUYING. SHOULD YOU NEED ADDITIONAL PHOTOS, SPECIFY THE AREA OF THE TIRE.
