One of the extremely rare autographed cards or Type 1 photographs from a collection of Eastern Block European athletes and a few from West Germany. The original, one-owner collection features this Wieland Schmidt autograph on a 4 1/16 inch by 5 3/4 inch matte finish thick stock Type 1 black and white (B&W) photograph with the bottom section printed blank in order to sign an autograph.  The signature is executed in thick blue felt-tip pen and is guaranteed to pass PSA/DNA, JSA (James Spence), and Beckett (Steve Grad).  German language notes on the back are in graphite/pencil.
Representing East Germany in the 1980, Wieland Schmidt led his Olympic team to an undefeated record during the preliminary rounds and through to the final where he was instrumental in winning 23-22 in overtime to secure the Gold Medal.  Today, Wieland Schmidt is an icon in the sport, a Hall of Famer, and a coach.  This is a vintage as well as period signature from 1980 and is unique in this format.
